My Favorite Gift

My mom is one of the best gift-givers ever. She will remember something you said you wanted months ago and there it is on your birthday or Christmas. When I turned 40 she gave me a box of love.

She bought this recipe box when I was a little girl. It was a gift to herself for Mother’s Day. I’ve mentioned before that we are a family that enjoys eating so in this box are many recipes of hers and other people that we have enjoyed over the years. What makes it even more special is the fact that on the back she has written a story about each recipe. Who it is from and where and when it would have been enjoyed.

I have recipes from my Grandparents, some of the ladies I knew as Mom’s friends growing up and from Mom of course. The meatloaf recipe card is blank because I know how to make it which I don’t do very often because mom used to make it every Wednesday night for dinner growing up. She worked full time, always made dinner and on Wednesday night she needed to do both and get to Wednesday evening service at church. When I had my own home I didn’t make meatloaf for a year.

The memories she wrote on the back are priceless. In the back I have added some hand written recipes as well. The one from my Grandma Rice I don’t even make very often but there is something special about having it written in her own hand.

So now that things may be a little tighter financially than usual and you have a person you want to do something special for I encourage you to get creative. Something like this or photos that you they might appreciate with the people’s names and what was going on written on the back. Special doesn’t always mean expensive or from the store. How unpredictable is that?
